Eternal Redemption

September 27, 2026 Preacher: Dr Gary Cass Series: Anchored In Christ | Called to Courageous Endurance

Scripture: Hebrews 9:11–15

What does it mean that Jesus Christ has obtained eternal redemption? Hebrews 9:11–15 presents Christ as the Great High Priest who accomplished what the Old Covenant priesthood and sacrifices could never accomplish.

The Old Testament tabernacle was a God-given picture of heavenly realities. Its priests, sacrifices, ceremonies, and barriers pointed forward to something greater. The repeated sacrifices could ceremonially cleanse the flesh, but they could not finally perfect the conscience or provide permanent access to God's presence.

Then comes the decisive statement: “But Christ came.”

Jesus Christ came as the High Priest of the good things to come. He is the fulfillment of God's promises and the substance to which the Old Covenant system pointed. Rather than entering a temporary earthly sanctuary, Christ entered the greater and more perfect heavenly reality—not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood.

Christ Has Come With the Good Things

The blessings secured by Christ include forgiveness, a cleansed conscience, access to God through the New Covenant, the Spirit of adoption, an everlasting priesthood and kingdom, resurrection hope, and an eternal inheritance.

Christianity is therefore not a religion waiting for God finally to act concerning sin and death. In the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God has acted decisively. Believers already possess the blessings of the age to come while awaiting their final consummation.

Christ Ministers in the Greater Tabernacle

Hebrews teaches that Christ has entered heaven itself to appear in the presence of God for us. The earthly tabernacle was only a copy of the true heavenly reality.

Because Christ has opened the way into God's presence, God's people no longer need an earthly temple, an Aaronic priesthood, or sacred geography to draw near to God. Through Jesus Christ, believers have access to God.

Christ Obtained Eternal Redemption

The heart of Hebrews 9:12 is the declaration that Christ entered the Most Holy Place “once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.”

Unlike the repeated sacrifices of the Old Covenant, Christ's sacrifice never needs to be repeated. His redemption does not expire. Christ has actually accomplished redemption for His people through His blood.

That truth gives Christians confidence in the face of suffering, persecution, and even death. The example of Ignatius of Antioch illustrates what happens when a Christian understands that earthly rulers can take only earthly life. They cannot take the eternal redemption secured by Jesus Christ.

What can Caesar ultimately do to someone possessing eternal redemption?

This sermon from Hebrews 9:11–15 calls Christians to rest in the finished work of Christ and to live unashamed and unafraid because our redemption is eternal.
