The Time Of Reformation
September 20, 2026 Preacher: Dr Gary Cass Series: Anchored In Christ | Called to Courageous Endurance
Scripture: Hebrews 9:1–10
This sermon examines why the Old Covenant sacrifices could not perfect the conscience. External ceremonies could provide ceremonial cleansing, but they could not remove the inward guilt of sin. Hebrews points instead to the blood of Christ, which cleanses the conscience and enables believers to approach God with confidence.
The message also explores what Hebrews means by “the time of reformation.” The Greek term refers to setting something straight, putting it in order, or bringing it into its proper form. Hebrews connects this reformation directly to the coming of Christ: “But Christ came.” Through His death, resurrection, ascension, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, Christ inaugurated the New Covenant and fulfilled what the Old Covenant had anticipated.
A cleansed conscience changes how Christians live. Instead of being enslaved by condemnation and fear, believers can serve the living God with confidence and courage. The grace of God not only saves us from sin but produces renewed hearts in which God's law is written.
The sermon concludes by returning to the example of Polycarp, whose confidence before an earthly ruler came from knowing that he was already reconciled to the ultimate Judge through Jesus Christ.
