Christ's Triumphal Ascent

March 29, 2026 Preacher: Dr Gary Cass Series: Holy Week

Scripture: John 12:12–17

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week and the most consequential week in human history. In this message, we explore the theological depth behind Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem recorded in John 12.

As Jesus ascends from Bethany over the Mount of Olives into Jerusalem, He fulfills ancient prophecy and reveals Himself as the promised King of Israel. The crowds welcome Him with palm branches and cries of “Hosanna,” expecting political liberation from Rome. Yet Christ arrives not on a warhorse but on a humble donkey, fulfilling Zechariah 9:9 and redefining kingship through humility and sacrificial love.

This sermon examines the prophetic timeline of Daniel, the resurrection of Lazarus as a sign of Christ’s power over death, and the crowd’s misunderstanding of the Messiah’s mission. Rather than establishing an earthly political kingdom, Jesus begins His redemptive work that culminates at the cross—where sin is judged, death is defeated, and the Kingdom of God is inaugurated.

Palm Sunday ultimately reveals that Christ’s triumph comes through suffering, sacrifice, and resurrection, bringing salvation not only to Israel but to all nations.
